About Our Wooden Rural Gates

I'm Sam, owner of Coastal Timber Gates. I build wooden rural gates for farms, estates and rural blocks across Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and the South Eastern suburbs, from my factory in Hastings.

Wooden rural gates for farms, estates and rural blocks

A wooden rural gate has to cope with wind, rain and daily use on an open block. I build each one for the property it will hang on.

Our Wooden Rural Gate Offerings Include:

Traditional farm gates: a classic farm design built for everyday use on a rural block.

Estate gates: a wider, more detailed entrance gate for an estate or larger property, made to suit the house and the driveway.

Country style gates: a simple rustic design for pedestrian or vehicle access that suits a rural fence line.

Why Opt for Coastal Timber Gates' Wooden Rural Gates?

Custom craftsmanship: I make each gate by hand from Australian timber in my Hastings factory.

Kerb appeal: a well-made timber gate is the first thing visitors see when they arrive.

Durability: rural gates face more wind and rain than most, so I brace, treat and paint every gate to handle it.

Personalised Design: I work closely with you to create gates that meet your specific needs and preferences, so the gate fits your rural setting.

Who designs and builds your rural gate?

I'm Sam, the owner of Coastal Timber Gates, and I handle every rural gate myself. I do the on-site consultation, the design, the build in my Hastings factory and the installation. You deal with one person from the first text to the final hinge adjustment.

I have designed and built custom timber gates since 2020. One of my earliest jobs was replacing a set of Hamptons-style gates in Mount Eliza. They were only 10 years old, but they had totally rotted. They were hardwood with mortice and tenon joints (a tongue glued into a slot), yet water had collected inside the joints. As I cut through one joint, water poured out onto the floor.

That job shapes every rural gate I build. I brace each gate properly, treat every cut surface against rot, prime it, then finish it with at least two coats of exterior paint.

Why I care how a rural gate is built

At Coastal Timber Gates, I'm passionate about bringing the timeless look of wooden rural gates to your property. I build them to cope with the weather on an open block.

Rural gates I have built on the Mornington Peninsula

One rural job I'm proud of is a pair of new Blackbutt timber gates in Flinders. Blackbutt is an Australian hardwood. These gates hang from the property's old pillars. I wasn't sure about hanging new gates from those pillars, but once the gates were up they looked right at home.

New Blackbutt timber gates on the original pillars at a property in Flinders, built and installed by Sam.

I have also built a gate for Polperro Winery in Red Hill and a run of rural paddock gates. Another set of curved-top Blackbutt gates was made to suit a new post and rail fence.

The photos of these jobs are in my gallery, and every one is my own work. Rural blocks around Red Hill and Flinders are open to wind and rain. That is why I take such care over bracing and sealing.

What does a wooden rural gate cost, and how long does it take?

My indicative prices run from about A$3,600 to about A$5,850, depending on design and configuration. The final price depends on the size, timber, framing, site, installation and any automation. Manufacturing typically takes around 1 to 2 weeks, and installation 1 to 2 days, both depending on the design and the site.

After the on-site consultation, I quote against a specific design, so you know the price before I start building. Want a farm gate to match your fence, or an estate gate with automation? Tell me at the first visit and it goes into the quote. You can see finished rural gates in my gallery of timber gates, and my about page explains how I build them.

Steel frames and automation for wide rural entrances

Rural openings are often wider than a suburban driveway. Where solid timber alone would not carry a long span, I build a discreet steel frame behind the gate.

The frame is powder coated to blend in, and it gives solid fixing points for hinges and automation motors. I install automation, including FAAC systems. Electrical work is done by appropriately qualified professionals where Victorian regulations require it.

After installation, I stay easy to reach. I service gate motors and check gates for damage, swing and alignment. Heavy rural gates work hard, so a regular check keeps them swinging true.
